Raised in Royal Oak Michigan, Jim began his career in home remodeling in California in 1978 as an apprentice carpenter. For several years, he worked as the installer for Kitchen Design Studios, installing European cabinetry. In that capacity, he worked on the Norman Ackerberg house, a project by architect Richard Meir, as well as many others.
Later, he was a lead carpenter and project manager for Adler Associates, which produced multiple large scale residential projects. Recruited to Louisville in 1991 by his wife Sandy, he restarted his career by redesigning and restoring older homes, in a partnership; Grissom-Phillips Inc.
In 1995 he co-established T&J Restoration Inc., which produced many successful remodeling projects.
In 2002, Jim established his current company, Jim Phillips Restoration & Remodeling, Inc., which has won numerous "blind juried" design/build awards for projects ranging from kitchens and baths, whole house remodels, additions, and interior and exterior improvements of a great variety, with a special emphasis on historic and soon to be historic homes. His team includes some of the best carpenters in Louisville.
